Thurgood Marshall Gathering His Papers

Asks

14 Apr 1955, Washington, DC, USA — Original caption: Asks Desegregation Ruling. Washington, D.C.: Thurgood Marshall, general counsel for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People pauses to gather his papers together outside the Supreme Court building. Attorney generals of the southern states are arguing before the high court in behalf of a decree giving lower courts wide leeway in bringing about desegregation of schools. Marshall is urging “forthwith” desegregation by next September, or, in the alternative, an outside deadline of September, 1956.
